Kiwirail Radio System wins Engineering Excellence Award

25 November 2010

KiwiRail and Xworks Radio Interoperability Systems are celebrating this evening after winning the Information, Communication Electrical and Electronic Technology (ICEET) category at the New Zealand Engineering Excellence Awards in Wellington.

The KiwiRail and Xworks entry, ORC400 is a custom-designed solution that allows KiwiRail to integrate its mobile radio systems with modern digital Internet Protocol (IP) networks and computer systems. The product supports a range of protocols in both the mobile radio and IP worlds and has extensive diagnostic capability. The final product is a flexible, fully integrated, low-bandwidth, vendor-neutral radio over internet protocol (RoIP) solution for bridging mobile radio networks and IP networks. It can be used with KiwiRail’s dispatch software.

The system offers significant cost-savings potential as KiwiRail can replace dedicated leased lines with cheaper IP connections that are often already in place in the company’s information technology infrastructure.

The ICCET award recognises exceptional activities associated with the development of improved or new communications hardware and/or software embedded systems, broadcasting, telecommunications, electrical or electronic products and controls.

‘The ORC400 is well-engineered, well-built and well-documented. The features support potentially wider applications to other areas of communication such as emergency services and there is interest from potential purchasers in other countries’ says Institution of Professional Engineers Chief Executive, Andrew Cleland.

Initiated in 2005, the New Zealand Engineering Excellence Awards are the premier awards for the engineering professionals of New Zealand. The awards are presented in two major areas: Awards Recognising People, that recognise leadership, innovation, entrepreneurship and our young engineers; and Project and Product Awards, which recognise achievement in the various industry areas, together with a Supreme Award for the best of the Project and Product winners.
