New Zealand Young Engineer of the Year 2011
This award recognises a young engineer who is judged to have made the most excellent contribution as an engineer and a leader, and through community involvement.
Camilla Gibbons
Camilla Gibbons holds a Masters degree in Engineering Geology from the University of Leeds, is a Chartered Geologist through the Geological Society of London, and is currently undertaking further study on engineering and construction management. She is a member of the New Zealand Geotechnical Society, and the International Association of Engineering Geologists.
Camilla has worked as an engineering geologist in the United Kingdom and more recently in Christchurch. Since the February 2011 earthquake she has been a team leader as part of the earthquake recovery effort. She heads a team of engineering geologists undertaking rock fall remediation, land movement monitoring and cliff collapse assessment in the Port Hills.
Camilla clearly finds this project rewarding, challenging and enjoyable, despite setbacks following major aftershocks. She has taken full advantage of the opportunity to work closely with international and New Zealand experts on landslide/rock fall assessment and remediation.
The judges were impressed with the way Camilla has met the extreme challenges in her work, showing leadership and “courage under fire”. She is playing an active part in the community-led redevelopment scheme for the Sumner area of Christchurch, where she lives.
