Rosedale Wastewater Treatment Plant Outfall Tunnel Rosedale Wastewater Treatment Plant
AECOM, Aurecon, McConnell Dowell and Tonkin & Taylor Ltd

The Rosedale Wastewater Treatment Plant Outfall Tunnel has a design life of at least 100 years and will effectively cater for the North Shore area’s continued growth. This will ensure ongoing protection of the quality of local beach environments.

During its operation the tunnel boring machine was adapted to cope with variable rock and ground water inflow conditions. The tunnel design included a cascade drop shaft that allows flow to cascade downwards. The innovative cascade configuration has a central wall that divides the shaft into a “wet” half fitted with alternating quarter-circle steps down which the flow is discharged, and an unobstructed “dry” half which serves as a final dissipation and de-aeration chamber and also allows access to the tunnel. The barge-based system used to join and lay pipe sections in the offshore trench proved particularly effective in spite of variable weather conditions. Potential community impacts during the project were carefully monitored and managed.
