Tauranga Harbour Link
NZ Transport Agency, Beca, URS New Zealand and The Fletcher Construction Company Ltd
Built in a heavily congested, environmentally sensitive area, the Tauranga Harbour Link was the largest roading project delivered in the Bay of Plenty and fifth largest in New Zealand at the time. It was completed three months early, with minimal traffic disruption and under budget. Communication to affected communities during the project was exemplary. The end result has exceeded expectations in the improvement in travel times and trip reliability. Community projects to expose school and tertiary students to careers in engineering were established on site. These included experiential learning opportunities which were supported by project engineers.
The project’s technical features include the use of bentonite piles to eliminate steel casings for pile construction, timber piles and vertical composite drains mitigating the liquefaction potential of the soil beneath the embank-ments and a triple blend self-compacting concrete mix was used, designed for durability in testing marine conditions.
