Dedicated bus lanes were constructed adjacent to a busy motorway in a constrained urban environment. Traffic management during the project was particularly effective, avoiding major disruption to road users.
Variable ground conditions in an environmentally sensitive site required complex foundation designs to be developed and then constructed. Major logistical issues were overcome through excellent project management involving a high level of planning and co-ordination. Flexibility to accommodate other utility services and other modes of future public transport was incorporated in the design.
The number of bus passengers has trebled to 150,000 per month, exceeding expectations, and the reduced use of private vehicles is estimated to have saved 400,000 litres per year of vehicle fuel.
