When new “3G” equipment was to be installed in over-crowded telecommunications exchanges, increasing
the 50-volt supply was both too expensive and logistically difficult to achieve within the space constraints.

The higher-performance equipment, increasing the need for cooling and seismic load changes, was also
a consideration. The chosen solution uses a 220-volt DC supply feeding 50-volt rectifiers at the equipment. This has led to lower costs compared to extending the existing power supply arrangement, and to superior performance during power outages.

The solution is a world first and the approach taken may have wider application in the global telecommunications industry.
