Project Storm 2: Dynamic Model Engineering
MWH New Zealand Ltd
Development of a comprehensive hydraulic model of the Auckland wastewater network – capable of predicting the size, frequency and quality of overflows from the wastewater network under a variety of weather and population scenarios – was undertaken to improve understanding of where in the network capital investment would be most effective.
Important features of the project were its sheer scale, which made the formulation of the model a complex task requiring rigorous control of data quality, and the application of leading-edge knowledge of hydraulic modelling and software for implementation. In the context of the wastewater network modelled, the results have contributed to reductions of $200 million in otherwise intended capital investment. The project has created a technology platform with the potential for wider application.
