The supercomputer centre will become one of the largest computational facilities in the world once fully populated. By careful attention to the choice of equipment and design, the physical footprint achieved was about 25 per cent less than equivalent installations elsewhere.

Energy efficiency was important – the cooling system uses only 60 per cent of the energy of a typical installation of this size, this being accomplished by use of high-density water-cooled cabinets and a design optimised against the criterion of energy efficiency.

Direct energy savings of four per cent were also achieved through the client accepting active voltage conditioning. The design has inherent flexibility as it is independent of the specific computing equipment installed and thus should meet the client’s needs for many years.
