Wellington Inner-city Bypass
Fulton Hogan, the NZ Transport Agency, Opus International Consultants and Wellington City Council
The $55 million Wellington inner-city bypass project is Wellington’s largest road construction project in a decade.
Constrained by limited construction space, the proximity of live traffic, nearby residences and commercial properties, the project faced a number of serious technical challenges and the engineering design team had to contend with high earthquake loads, poor ground quality and various groundwater issues.
A comprehensive archaeological survey took place prior to moving a number of heritage buildings in the area, and the sensitive relocation and refurbishment of displaced heritage buildings with buildings of a similar age and style in separate precincts has enhanced the community benefits.
The completed Wellington inner-city bypass project has greatly enhanced Wellington’s motorist, pedestrian and cyclist facilities, and has reduced the impact of city traffic on nearby residents and businesses.
The need to address the impact upon the adjacent environment has been met comprehensively with noise suppression panel on the structures as well as the road pavement utilising a noise reducing surfacing (WhispA).
