Kate Valley Landfill’s sheer scale and approach to waste and environmental problems represent world best-practice engineering, and it improves the quality of life for the communities of the Canterbury region.
This project is the result of more than 10 years of planning an integrated solution to waste disposal in Canterbury. It brought together all the Canterbury councils for the first time to address a pressing issue that was too big for any of them to tackle alone.
The project has resulted in more than 50 badly located old-fashioned dumps being closed, and replaced with a modern, fully engineered landfill that will serve Canterbury for the next 35 years. The project includes the preservation of 410 hectares of threatened native bush, and the creation of public walkways and educational opportunities.
An extremely tight construction timetable was met using an innovative ‘alliance’ approach, which delivered the finished facility on time, on budget and to rigid quality specifications.
The regional landfill has been developed to the highest international standards and includes many innovative features. It represents an effective, low-impact solution to a very high-profile environmental issue.
