Great South Road / Sylvia Park Road Intersection Upgrade and Bridge Replacement
Maunsell Ltd

The $9.5 million Great South Road / Sylvia Park Intersection Upgrade and Bridge Replacement project was one of the largest construction works undertaken by the Auckland City Council to relieve traffic congestion, cater for growth, make intersections safer, and address pedestrian, cycleway and storm-water issues. Maunsell provided the scheme assessment, preliminary design, detailed design and construction observation.

With a web of major utility pipes and cables, and the need to maintain two-way traffic flows of 33,000 vehicles per day and rail services, it was a challenging and complex engineering project.

The economic benefits to the community were significant with savings calculated at over $38 million over 25 years.
Complexities included replacing a bridge over the main trunk railway, relocating, protecting or upgrading of major sewers, stormwater drains, high-pressure gas mains and electrical transmission cables.

Consultation and direct liaison with the public, service agencies and contractors, coupled with innovation in a number of areas ensured that this major engineering project with noteworthy benefits avoided significant disruption to the local community.
