New Zealand Engineering Excellence Awards
The Award winners 2005
New Zealand Engineering Innovator of the Year 2005
Brian Smellie
"Brian receives this award in recognition of his innovative use of technology in a range of very different electronic products he has designed and marketed over almost three decades."
– Dr Bas Walker, Chief Judge
Brian has built up a reputation over the years for translating extremely complex technical requirements into commercially successful products. It started with the Bonus Bonds Computer System – ELSIE II – while a senior engineer in the New Zealand Post Office. It continued in the Harding Signals Company where, as Company Engineer, he developed a range of equipment.
More recently, Brian developed a range of specialised GPS-controlled time keeping devices, resulting in software that integrated this technology into a more compact and electrically isolated unit than any other similar product in the world.
Tekron International Limited was formed in 2002 and concentrates on the design and manufacture of specialised Time Synchronisation Equipment. They are already the dominant supplier of GPS clocks to the Australasian power industry and have a growing presence in the Asian, North American and Middle East markets.
Brian’s efforts are those of the truly successful innovator – many long years of hard work at the forefront of a specialised area of technology finally resulting in technical leadership and a world-class product being sold around the globe.
